Our start to the new Science program for Grade 5 and 6 started with a bang. Students revised what they knew about solids, liquids and gases and looked at chemical changes together with reversible and irreversible changes.
Our first experiment examined what happened when you mixed bicarbonate soda with vinegar. We discovered that when it was mixed together it made carbon dioxide.
Using a plastic bottle, a balloon, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda we placed 1/2 a cup of vinegar in the bottle and 3 dessert spoons of bi carb into the balloon. Then we carefully secured the balloon over the top of the neck of the bottle. After checking that we were all in a safe position, we lifted the balloon to allow the bicarb to mix with the vinegar. Mixing the vinegar and the bicarb created the carbon dioxide which amazingly blew up our balloon!!
