There have been some exciting developments in the Maths section of the Templestowe Valley Primary School website www.tempvalprimary.vic.edu.au/mathForm.php

The students now have the option of submitting a response to the fortnightly problem on-line using a web form. Some of these responses will be published on the school website. However, only responses that have attempted to explain how the problem was worked out will be published.

If a response is published, only the student’s initials, grade level and school will be published eg PW, Grade 5, TVPS as recognition as the author of the response. Later in the year, there will be a certificate awarded at our Monday morning assembly to the student who has submitted the best response. If you have any suggestions or comments about this new initiative, please do not hesitate to email me (address below) as your input is important and valued.

Critter Care
During his school holidays, Lyle cared for his neighbours' pets while the neighbours were away. He got paid for each visit to each house. Lyle made 36 trips in all. He had to keep track of the number of times he went to each house.

  • Lyle fed and played with the McGraths' cat, Snowball, twice a day for four days while the family was away.
  • He walked the Dunns' dog, Fido, twice a day but for one day less than he took care of Snowball.
  • Chow, the Carbones' puppy, needed a lot of attention. So Lyle went to the Carbones' house three times a day. The Carbone family was away two more days than the McGrath family.
  • Lyle visited the Quinns' hamster, Squeaky, less often than he visited any other pet.

How many trips did he make to each house?

13/8/09 Answer:
Lyle’s trips
McGraths' house: 8 trips in all
Dunns' house: 6 trips in all
Carbones' house: 18 trips in all
Quinns' house: 4 trips in all

Marathon Members
5500, 5328, 5216, 5330, 3417
These are the numbers that Miss Mecuri, Miss Mardjetko, Mrs Hocking, Mr Cretney, and Mr Jones wore when they ran in a marathon.

Each of the 5,500 runners in the marathon wore a different number. The runners got their numbers in the order that they signed in on the day of the race. So the first person to sign in got number 1 and the last person to sign in got number 5,500.

* Of the group of five, Miss Mecuri had the lowest number.
* The digit in the tens place on Mr Cretney's shirt is one more than the digit in the tens place on Miss Mecuri's shirt.
* Mrs Hocking was the last person to sign in for the race.
* Mr Jones and Mr Cretney were closest to each other in line.
* Miss Mardjetko's number is lower than Mr Cretney's.
