Your child has a right to enrol at their local school. This right is set out in the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. This means, if your child lives within the school zone, they must be offered a place when seeking enrolment. The Department of Education provides guidance through the Placement Policy to ensure that students have access to their designated neighbourhood school and the freedom to choose other schools, subject to facility limitations.
To enrol in a government school, a child must turn 5 before 30 April of the year they start school.
You can find more information and answers to frequently asked questions on the Department of Education’s website.
